Using non-donor blood and having bloodless surgery can help avoid Cytomegalovirus, Chagas disease, and other blood borne illnesses.  Also note screening for Hepatitis is not 100% fool proof and people every year contract Hepatitis even though blood type and cross matching is checked. Bloodless surgery helps with keeping your immune system from lowering.  There are many problems with transfusions that can be avoided and many alternatives available.  See "Bloodless Surgery:  Transfusion Alternatives" on Squidoo.
