There are a lot of numbers thrown around $180-1500 US for cost per unit but real costs ( Axel Hofmann, ME ) are $2500-3500. This is without complications. With complications costs can be $400,000 - one was $750,000. However there is lawsuit going on in TN from last year for a lot of change. Woman actually received serveral units - 2 during operation - one was not hers ( sounds like predonated ) and four to flush out the 'wrong blood'.
Axel Hofmann also stated at anemia conference Nov 8/10 that cost of blood transfusions is over $40 billion in the US and similar in E.U.
