There are a lot of numbers thrown around $180-1500 US for cost per unit but real costs ( Axel Hofmann, ME ) are $2500-3500. This is without complications. With complications costs can be $400,000  - one was $750,000. However there is lawsuit going on in TN from last year for a lot of change. Woman actually received serveral units - 2 during operation - one was not hers ( sounds like predonated ) and four to flush out the 'wrong blood'.

Axel Hofmann also stated at anemia conference Nov 8/10 that cost of blood transfusions is over $40 billion in the US and similar in E.U.

"she filed a lawsuit against the hospital, alleging medical malpractice and seeking nearly three million dollars in damages for past and future medical expenses in addition to lost earnings."

"Now something very bad happened with Mrs. Frazier with her blood, but what concerns me is, is there another side to that coin out there somewhere?  Someone else who ended up with her blood?  That I can't answer," said Frazier's attorney, Robert Whitaker."
