    HBOC availibility

    First,

Thanks Larry, I can finally post.

Question: How can I assist my local hospital in obtaining HBOC?
One of the Residents mentioned it was highly experimental and not easily obtainable.
Right now this seems the only solution for a unique case of one individual that may need an emergency surgery.

    Thanks

    Jabriol.

    Not available in USA

We tried a couple of years ago to get access to HBOC after a bad motorcyle accident severely injured a patient who's hemoglobin had dropped to 4.8g/dl. One of our residents called all over the place trying to see if we could get it based on humanitarian needs, knowing that the product was in FDA trials. Our staff was told that it was not available under any circumstances, and I'm sure with some of the recent press expressing concern over dangers associated with HBOC's, it would be even harder to access them now. Hopefully the issues will be cleared up in the future and we'll get a yes or no on the use of HBOC's, but for now I can only tell you what we ran up against when asking for this product. Hope you can find a suitable alternative.

    what alternatives are available

I can think of Erythropoietin to raise RBC mass, short though quick acting

correction of anaemia, using B12 and folate or Iron [if macro / micro-cytic respectively]

if a patient has normocytic anaemia, are iron and b12/folic acid of any use,

their doses balanced to keep the Mean Cell Volume within reference range

ie any decrease in Mean cell volume caused by folate and B12 balanced by the rise in MCV caused by iron.

and how do you raise the mean cell haemoglobin?

about Biopure, CEO fraud posted by Jan Wade on here

I want to know what alternatives exist

what about oxycyte, has anyone heard of its use/seen it or used it etc

said to be 70 fold more effective at carrying oxygen than blood, used to rapidly perfuse brain in stroke victims with oxygenated haemoglobin due to its small diametre to prevent necrosis

this could possibly be mixed 1 part to 69 parts of a plasma volume expander and this given as a blood substitute [if it really is 70 times as effective], I want to know if this is possible/viable

    HBOC and bovine diseases

The Biopure cows (source material for HBOC) are a protected herd and are not fed bone meal, they are also raised in the US and not in Euproe or the UK. The risk of transmission is probably none.
The IB for the product goes into all the details of the herd and how and what it is fed.
