AABB Publishes Resource to Facilitate Application of Patient Blood Management Principles
AABB recently published "Citations in Patient Blood Management" now located in the association's Digital Downloads library. This document contains a list of 1,800 references, compiled from multiple AABB publications on patient blood management (PBM). "These citations were selected by AABB authors as being the most useful resources on the topics they wrote about and are gathered in this one document to facilitate the scientific assessment and clinical application of the principles of PBM," said James AuBuchon, MD, FCAP, FRCP(Edin), AABB's immediate past president, in the preface to the publication. The references have been categorized by multiple topics and subtopics, and the electronic format allows for easy searching.
"Citations in Patient Blood Management" can be used alone or as a companion to "Getting Started in Patient Blood Management," which describes the five major concepts of PBM and provides rationale for limiting transfusions. This resource also offers generic advice for clinicians and institutions getting started in PBM and provides sample documentation that can be used by transfusion committees and others with oversight responsibilities.
These publications, each available in PDF format, are free to AABB members. Nonmembers can purchase them for a nominal fee. Additional information on PBM is available on the AABB website.
